Bailiwick of Guernsey Scouts

1st (Victoria) Scout Group

As sea scouts we kayak, we row, we sail and we build rafts. We have as much fun at Rue Mainguy Reservoir as we do on the sea.  As part of the local Royal Navy group, our scouts enjoy finding out more about the Navy, the fleet and the breadth of work they do. We have also been treated to tours of HMS Daring and talks from serving officers when they visit Guernsey.

But we don’t just spend time on the water we also do patrol-based activities. The scouts are often working as a team on a challenge or task. Whether cooking, kayaking, building or navigating we use these team-based activities to provide a chance for scouts to learn about themselves and each other.

We are based at St Stephen’s Community Centre and, along with other groups based there, contribute to several community projects.

As their chosen community project our scouts have developed a partnership with Guernsey Disability Alliance. They have met representatives from GDA, planned events and organised events to share the fun and friendship of scouting – this continues to be an immensely rewarding and learning experience for all who take part.

Once a term our patrol leaders meet with adult leaders and young leaders for a leadership forum to review activities, share ideas and shape future events. We enjoy these creative planning sessions and like to work traditional scouting activities around themes often chosen by the scouts – Harry Potter, the Royal Navy, North America are some of our recent topics which we have planned meetings, weekends or a whole term around!

We are very proud of the commitment and determination many of our scouts show and in the number who succeed in completing the Gold Scout Award – the top award for scouts of this age range.

Beavers is open to all boys and girls aged between six and eight years old who want to make friends and have fun. Beavers follow a balanced programme giving young people an opportunity to personally develop in all areas, learning to be safe and most importantly making friends. The leaders ensure that all Beavers cover and experience a whole range of exciting activities.

Cub Scouting is available to all boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 10½ years old who want to join the adventure.

Cub Scouts meet together as a Pack in ‘Sixes’ (small groups) which is run by a team of adult volunteers and assisted by parent helpers.

Available to all boys and girls aged between 10½ and 14 years old who want to join the Scouting adventure.

Scouts meet together as a Troop in ‘Patrols’ (small groups). A Scout called a Patrol Leader leads the Patrol and the Patrol Leaders work with a team of volunteers and assisted by parent helpers, in setting the programme and in decisions affecting the Troop. The Patrol system is one of the important ways that young people can take responsibility for themselves and others.
